The 1st April was National Orphan’s day in Egypt where people across Egypt came together to honour the many thousands of orphans throughout the country. Celebrations took place all over Egypt including the Orphanage which we support in Cairo.
Dar al Rahman is a small orphanage looking after about 10 children currently aged between 6 to10 years. These children will remain with the orphanage throughout their childhood up to the age of 18, when they are then provided with assistance with further education, finding jobs, and a private apartment to live in.
For the past 5 years Uncover the World have been donating a minimum of £2 from every passenger booked to the various charities and projects which we support in the countries where we operate tours, including the Dar al Rahman Orphanage in Cairo. Over these 5 years our donations have helped to purchase many things such as clothing, bedding, toys, study equipment and take the children on fun day trips such as to the El Ezba Resort and Magic Land. Our donations continue to be an ongoing commitment and recently we have contributed towards renovations at the Orphanage which included a new plumbing system, repairs to the electrical systems, redecoration and the construction of an outdoor activity room for the children.
As part of our responsible tourism policy we like to give our travellers the option to visit the Orphanage whilst in Cairo, especially those who are travelling with children on our family tours. This year on Orphan’s Day a group of our clients visited Dar al Rahman and joined the children and workers in celebrating this special day. Festivities included a puppet show, clowns and lots of singing and jokes which the children were encouraged to join in with. Our clients were also joined by reporters from an Arab Newspaper and were featured in one their articles (see newspaper cutting below).
Orphan’s Day takes place on the first Friday in April each year. If you will be in Egypt in April 2012 and would like to join the celebrations, please let one of our consultants know and we will be happy to make arrangements for you.
