On May 24th, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities announced that 57 Ancient Egyptian Tombs had been discovered at Lahoun in the Fayoum region of Egypt, approximately 70 miles from
Cairo.
Many of these tombs contain ornately painted wooden sarcophagi, some dating back as far as 2750 BC. These discoveries provide much more information on Ancient Egyptian religions, many tombs contained texts from the Book of the Dead and painted scenes depicting Egyptian deities.
One of the oldest tombs was discovered almost completely intact with much of its funerary equipment remaining and also a wooden sarcophagus containing a mummy wrapped in linen.
This recent discovery follows last years discovery of 53 stone tombs in the same area.
We visit Fayoum on many of our
Egyptian Desert Tours and a day trip to Fayoum can be added to almost any of our other tours. We aren't sure yet of what access is available to these tombs but this latest find is sure to draw many more tourists to this relatively unvisited part of Egypt.
